The New York Times reported on January 19 of this year that the FBI, the NSA, and the CIA had “intercepted communications” by Donald Trump and his associates.
American law enforcement and intelligence agencies are examining intercepted communications and financial transactions as part of a broad investigation into possible links between Russian officials and associates of President-elect Donald J. Trump, including his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, current and former senior American officials said.
Those anonymous “current and former senior American officials” are never identified by the Times, and their relationship to the possibly illegal surveillance of the Republican then-president-elect is never clarified. But we do know that the operations included wiretaps:
The F.B.I. is leading the investigations, aided by the National Security Agency, the CIA and the Treasury Department’s financial crimes unit. The investigators have accelerated their efforts in recent weeks but have found no conclusive evidence of wrongdoing, the officials said. One official said intelligence reports based on some of the wiretapped communications had been provided to the White House.
So to those who continue to insist that there is “no proof” of wiretapping of Trump by the Obama Administration, perhaps the authors of the original piece –Michael S. Schmidt, Matthew Rosenberg, Adam Goldman, and Matt Apuzzo — will be able to provide the particulars.
