— For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.
Like other rulers before him, Antiochus underestimated the will and strength of his Jewish adversaries and sent a small force to put down the rebellion. When that was annihilated, he led a more powerful army into battle only to be defeated. In 164 BCE, Jerusalem was recaptured by the Maccabees and the Temple purified, an event that gave birth to the holiday of Chanukah.
A brief respite from the mayhem to reflect on the ways of our forbears
The earliest people on Earth knew that the sun’s path across the sky, the length of daylight, and the location of the sunrise and sunset all shifted in a regular way throughout the year. They built monuments such as Newgrange in Ireland, Stonehenge in England – or, for example, at Machu Picchu in Peru – to follow the sun’s yearly progress.
People gather at Newgrange for winter solstice dawn on each of the mornings from December 18th to December 23rd inclusive. Sunrise is at 8.58am. All access to the chamber is decided by lottery. However, everyone else is welcome to stand on the outside of the monument.
Dowth is another monument in the same Brú na Bóinne complex of Megalithic monuments and World Heritage Site. It is aligned with the setting sun on the Winter Solstice.

Yasmin Seweid, the Baruch College student who claimed she was attacked by “three Trump supporters” while onlookers in a subway station did nothing, has been arraigned on two misdemeanor charges.
But the frightening aspect of the story is her altered appearance. Gone is the hijab she wore to cover her hair, and which she claimed her alleged assailants tried to pull off her head. In its place, and in place of her long hair, is a very close cropped haircut –no hijab needed. Also gone is any trace of makeup. Or smile.
The young woman recanted her assault story to police, claiming she made it up out of fear of angering her father after she spent the night out drinking with friends. She then disappeared for a week, and was later found at her sister’s home in Fishkill, NY.
Saweid had been having problems with her strict Muslim Egyptian family in North New Hyde Park because she is becoming “Westernized,” one source said. Those problems were aggravated when they learned she was dating a Catholic, the source said.
Seweid was released without bail early Thursday after her arraignment in Manhattan. She left with her father and was escorted by court officers.
A young man threw a dark jacket over her head — with her once-long hair shorn in a buzz cut — and then helped her into a black SUV before they drove off.
Neither Seweid nor her Legal Aid attorney, Benjamin J. West, would comment, and she did not speak inside the courtroom either.
Let’s hope that her friends, or her attorney, will be able to check on her, since she may now be in real danger. Not from fictional Trump-supporting attackers, but from her own family.

Yes, yet another young Muslim woman has loudly declared to the world, “Don’t take my word for anything. If I tell you it’s Tuesday, get a second opinion.”
A New York college student who said she was harassed on a subway train earlier this month has been arrested, law enforcement sources told NBC 4 New York.
Yasmin Seweid, 18, was charged with filing a false report after she told authorities three men called her a terrorist and chanted “Donald Trump” at her aboard the 23rd Street 4/5/6 subway station on Dec. 1.
Now police sources have told NBC 4 New York that Seweid allegedly admitted to them she had been out drinking with friends, and made up the attack to distract her angry father. . . .
The Baruch College student originally said she told police she was approached by three men and told to “get out of this country,” was called a terrorist aboard the train and told to “get the f****** hijab off your head!” She also alleged that one of the men grabbed her bag and broke the strap.
That’s right: the assailant said “get the f****** hijab off your head.” Sounds likely.
Seweid posted to Facebook about the attack on Dec. 2, saying that “it breaks my heart that so many individuals chose to be bystanders while watching me get harassed verbally and physically by these disgusting pigs.”. . . She called the incident “traumatizing” and spoke with multiple news organizations about it.
Shouldn’t we just have it on disk, leave out the date, the location, and maybe the number of white male attackers, but otherwise have it ready to go?
And of course, the “Trump supporter” bit is a new wrinkle. All the latest hate crime hoaxes have “Trump supporters” as the assailants, when in fact real or imagined Trump supporters are much more likely to be the victims, as can be seen in this example.
But the general contours of this “Islamophobic hate crime” nonsense are always the same. Should we have it ready to cue up whenever the next heinous attack on the poor, poor, poor Muslim™ occurs? Or rather, doesn’t?
Last month we had this:
A Muslim female college student who claimed she was attacked and robbed by two “white male” Trump supporters for wearing a hijab admitted to police she made the whole story up.
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – A University of Louisiana Lafayette student who said she was physically attacked and robbed of her wallet and hijab made up the story, according to the Lafayette Police Department.
Public Information Officer Karl Ratcliff said police are currently reviewing the possibility of charging the 18-year-old student with filing a false police report.
The young woman filed a police report Wednesday claiming two white males approached her near the campus, in the 100 block of Smith Street, around 11 a.m.
She also claimed one of the males was wearing a “Trump” hat and they both yelled racial obscenities at her, police said. The Lafayette Police Department issued a news release saying: “During the course of the investigation, the female complainant admitted that she fabricated the story about her physical attack as well as the removal of her hijab and wallet by two white males.”
